Smoking and heart

Smoking has effects nearly on all of our organs in body. We can say that smoking is a legal poison widely used around world. Government tries to prevent smoking from different campaigns. But many people around us cannot understand that smoking is very dangerous poison. We have discussed wide range of effects of smoking in our previous blogs. Now we will see effects of smoking in cardiovascular system. How smoking affects our heart ? How smoking affects our blood and blood vessels ? and many more answers we will find in this article.

Smoking  is a major cause of cardiovascular disease and death from heart attack . Smoking has a greater effect on heart after lungs. Smoking harms the cells of lining of vessels and deposit the plaque around the lining of arteries. And narrows the lumen of arteries. And once the arteries narrows it will increase the blood pressure due to high volume of blood and low space inside vessels. So atherosclerosis and hypertension is one of the prime feature related to heart disease present in smokers.

In atherosclerosis, arteries narrows and becomes less flexible due to deposition of fat inside the lumen of arteries. Arteries which supplies the blood to the heart muscle can get blocked by deposition of fat inside the lumen. And this phenomenon we can call as coronary heart disease or chronic ischaemic heart disease. Smokers are at more risk of developing heart attack.

Due to atherosclerosis, some times a plaque may get ruptured and flow into circulation and can obstruct the blood flow to the brain, which is called as stroke. Stroke may ischaemic or haemmorhagic, and both can be caused by smoking. If there was a hypertension, then haemmorhagic stroke may occur.

Due to extreme narrowing of blood vessels. Blood flow may be deprived to distant organs like arms, legs, feet and hand. And it can also cause the gangrene of leg in extreme cases. This entity is known as peripheral arterial disease. Due to atherosclerosis, lining of arteries may weaken due to deposition of fat and it will also cause the aneurysm in some cases, like abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Smoking also decreases the level of HDL cholesterol which is known as good cholesterol. And increases the level of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides which is known as bad cholesterol. It will increases the risk of atherosclerosis and hypertension which will indirectly increase the risk of heart diseases.
